Public transport options for Munich
Dear visitor, now that you are here in Munich, we are sure you will want to see and enjoy our beautiful city. To help you with that, we leave here a small overview with the fares to commute around Munich.
The public transport network is mostly managed by MVV (https://www.mvv-muenchen.de). You can buy all the tickets at any U-bahn or S-bahn station. Trams and buses also include their own machines inside the vehicle. You can also download the MVGO app to your smartphone. The fares which we show below apply only to the Zone M, which includes almost all the city, but not nearby villages.
Single trip
https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/tickets-and-fares/tickets-daytickets/single-ticket/index.html
A single trip in zone M costs 3.90 €. This includes all public transport inside Munich (S-bahn, U-bahn, tram and buses). We don’t recommend this option, since it is expensive after a few trips.
Streifenkarte
https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/tickets-and-fares/tickets-daytickets/stripe-ticket/index.html
If you are going to do several trips, you can buy a Stripe Ticket (“Streifenkarte”). For the ticket to be valid, you need to stamp it in the station before boarding a U-bahn/S-bahn or inside the tram/bus. A “Streifenkarte” costs 17 € and has 10 stripes, but each travel in the zone M costs 2 stripes. This means each trip would cost 3.40 €, if you use all the stripes. This is a good option for locals who travel only occasionally, but it is probably not worth for visitors.
Daily ticket
https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/tickets-and-fares/tickets-daytickets/single-day-ticket/index.html
For more than 3 trips per day, a daily ticket is already cheaper than single tickets. It’s 9.20 € and it is valid until 6 a.m. of the next day. This is ideal if you want to move independently and are only staying 2 days. For longer stays, there are more affordable options.
Group daily ticket
https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/tickets-and-fares/tickets-daytickets/group-day-ticket/index.html
It costs 17.80 € and is valid for 2-5 people. That means that it’s already worth it if you’re not traveling alone and you’re staying a maximum of 2 days. There’s only one catch: you need to travel always together! This might be a problem if the group is to be split at some point of your visit to Munich.
Isacard (weekly/monthly ticket)
https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/ticketshop-preise/zeitkarten-abos/isarcard/index.html (German)
A weekly Isacard serves as a personal ticket and is only 21.10 €. This is our recommended option if you are staying for more than 2 days.
CityTourCard
https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/tickets-and-fares/tickets-daytickets/citytourcard/index.html#c12632
It includes some discounts for activities in Munich. However, the best thing is that you can buy “group” CityTourCards for 2-5 people up until 6 days. For example, a CityTourCard of 6 days costs 80.90 €, which is cheaper than 4 weekly Isacards. In most of the cases, the Isacard is a better option because of the flexibility it provides. But if you are planning to travel always together it might be worth considering this option.
Trips to the airport and the Airport-City-Day-Ticket
https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/tickets-and-fares/tickets-daytickets/airport-city-day-ticket/index.html
Munich Airport (MUC) is located in zone 5. When buying daily/weekly tickets is usually not worth including zones M to 5. It is almost always better to buy a single ticket from the airport (13.60 €) and then buy the daily/weekly tickets just for the zone M. You can also buy an Airport-City-Day-Ticket if you travel with more people. It costs 15.50 € for one person, but only 29.10 € for 2-5 people.
Fares for other zones
In case you have your accommodation outside of zone M, the fares described above might change. We leave here the tables with the prices depending on the zones.
